It is not that easy to find a person for free.

A private detective could probably find the person for you pretty easily (and fast too), but if you want to find people free, you obviously can't use the help of a detective.

If you met this person many years ago, much time has passed and the two of you may be in completely different places as compared to back then.

However, the world has become so much more technology oriented in the past 15 or 20 years that it is becoming a lot easier to find someone. 20 years ago you would have to have found out an old friend's address and mailed a letter to them. Now everyone has an email address and most people are on some sort of social networking website.

As long as you know something about this person, chances are you will find him or her online. The world has become a much smaller place with technology, so do not worry, you will end up finding whoever it is you are looking for.

Find People on Facebook
The best place to start is by searching Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, LikedIn, Orkut and Google + profiles. This is of course free and chances are that he or she has some sort of social networking page.

Even if your old friend happens to have a common name, you can probably narrow things down based on friend networks and/or location. Usually Facebook or other social network profiles have a picture or some basic information about someone. That can help you decide whether or not the person is who you are looking for.

While this might take some time, it is a very effective way and the results will be a lot better than you imagine.

Free People Finders
Another way to find people for free is through free people finders / online websites to find people. There are people locators to find old friends that are free. There you can search names and see what information comes up.

Don't expect too much of people search engines or databases though. To avoid frustration and disappointment, know that there might be a possibility that the information you receive is outdated or incorrect.

You can find a person online if you have their name just by searching for him or her on Google.

Ask the School
If you know where the person went to elementary, middle or high school you could call the schools to ask for some information on the person.
